Common Questions About Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) is a degree-based health profession, regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Occupational therapists use a whole-person perspective to work with individuals, groups and communities to achieve optimal health and wellbeing through participation in the occupations of life.  The term ‘occupation’ is from the Latin word for ‘task’, therefore, occupational therapy practise is very task-oriented.  We focus on assisting clients to overcome barriers that injury, disease or disorders may set in the participation or performance of daily tasks and activities that a person wants or needs to do in life.

Occupational therapists can assist in assessing your individual needs and formulating a goal-oriented plan to overcome any issues that may impact what you do in day to day life, and how well you can engage in them.  Treatment can approach a wide range of components, such as cognition, movement, modifications to your home and environment, equipment provision, and task-based training to develop capacity.  An OT’s key goal is to facilitate engagement in the key activities in their clients’ lives, to ensure they can engage in the tasks they need to do, and to engage in the activities that are meaningful to them as an individual.

Your occupational therapist will initially sit with you to gather information about your health challenges, and the way that these impact the things you do in day to day life.  They will ask you a range of questions so they can learn about what is important to you, and collaborate with you to formulate a plan of key interventions and approaches tailored to the individual.   Your therapist may undertake some standardised questions or assessments, or work with you to establish which occupations are impacted by your condition.  OT assessment predominantly occurs in the home and explores functioning within the day to day tasks that we all do in our daily lives.

AT TRS, our OT clinicians pride themselves on an exceptional standard of service provision.  Our clinicians come from a wide range of backgrounds and specialise in a multitude of clinical interventions and therapies. We will always collaborate with you in our approach, and ensure our plans are made with you, to facilitate an individually tailored approach that is specific to your needs.  Our therapist looks to build a strong therapeutic relationship that facilitates an improved quality of life for each and every one of our clients.

We consider it a privilege to be invited into your home, and will always respect and appreciate the opportunity to support you in achieving goals that are most meaningful to you.
